In 1978 he graduated from the faculty of Therapy of the Azerbaijan State Medical Institute.
In 1978-1984, he worked as a traumatologist in the Nagorno-Karabakh province hospital (Khankendi city). In 1984 he entered postgraduate study at the Central Traumatology and Orthopedics Institute (Moscow) and in 1987 he defended his thesis on “Comparative Assessment of Surgical Treatment Methods of Lumbar Spine Osteochondrosis” («Сравнительная оценка методов хирургического лечения остеохондроза поясничного отдела позвоночника»). Since 1987 he has worked at the Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics as a junior scientific worker, senior scientific worker and since 2001 as a head of scientific division. In 2005 he defended his doctoral thesis on the theme of “Complex conservative and operative treatment of scoliosis” («Комплексное консервативное и оперативное лечение сколиоза») in the Central Traumatology and Orthopedics Institute of the Russian Federation (Moscow).

Y.R. Jalilov’s main directions of the scientific and clinical researches are dedicated to: Orthopedic and surgical treatment of degenerative diseases of the spine; Diagnosis, orthopedic and surgical treatment of spinal column deformations; Treatment of various etiologic traumatic and orthopedic pathologies of extremities. His scientific-clinical activity is covered in 121 scientific articles and 1 methodical recommendation. Y.R. Jalilov is the author of 5 patents and 18 rationalization proposals of the USSR and the Republic of Azerbaijan. 30 of his scientific articles have been published in the leading scientific journals of the foreign countries.

Since 2014 he is the President and Founder of the Azerbaijan Traumatologists and Orthopedists Association.
